COAPPP Resources, Training and Education, and Technical Assistance

Resources
COAPPP has access to and can provide resources from academic, national, and state experts in the field of adolescent sexual health, teen parenting, and related topics. The following is a list of ways that COAPPP can disseminate information and resources to youth-serving and healthcare professionals in Colorado communities. COAPPP staff are bilingual and can provide most resources in Spanish or English. Please contact Shannon Sainer for more information on bilingual resources.
    • e-KNOW: A monthly e-newsletter that highlights and provides links to the latest research, events, funding, and program resources available related to adolescent sexual health. It also features a “community spotlight” discussing hot topics or recognizing champions in teen health. COAPPP publishes the e-KNOW at the beginning of each month. If you would like to join our listserv, please contact Robyn Aasmundstad.
     • Website www.coappp.org: COAPPP updates this website frequently with current news articles, press releases, resources for professionals and upcoming events.
     • In the Know: This annual print newsletter and annual report, published each spring, highlights significant research and programs impacting the health and well-being of Colorado youth and their families. It discusses COAPPP projects and achievements and recognizes priority work for the upcoming year.
     • The State of Adolescent Sexual Health in Colorado: COAPPP annually releases this report of state and national data and statistics on teen pregnancy, teen births, sexually transmitted diseases and its impact on Colorado youth and health disparities. All data included in this report is gathered and compiled by COAPPP from various sources, including the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
     • County-Level or Populations-Specific Fact Sheets: For community partners, COAPPP compiles teen birth and STI data for specific counties, regions and populations in Colorado, upon request. This data can provide evidence for the need for programs and funding in specific communities or with specific populations. Please contact Shannon Sainer for more information or to requests a specific fact sheet.
     • Topic-Specific Research and Data: COAPPP has access to national and state experts and research on a variety of topics related to teen pregnancy, teen parenting, HIV, STIs and adolescent health. Individuals looking for research articles or data to support local programs or funding that address specific topics impacting teen health can contact Shannon Sainer.

Training and Education
COAPPP has trained educators and presenters available upon request to present and train to professionals, community groups, educators and decision-makers on a variety of topics including:
     • COAPPP Statewide Conference: COAPPP and the Colorado Association of School Based Health Care are joining together to bring in nationally recognized experts in the field of adolescent sexual health for a two day conference for youth-serving and healthcare professionals. The upcoming conference and pre-conference will be held in the Denver metro area April 17th and 18th, 2008, (pre-conference April 16th).
     • The State of Adolescent Sexual Health in Colorado: This presentation/training offers research and data on national, state and county teen pregnancy, teen birth, HIV and STIs and health disparities and the status of current policies and programs throughout Colorado.
     • Putting Research to Practice, an Introduction to Science-Based Approaches to Teen Pregnancy, HIV and STI prevention: This presentation/training provides information and resources on programs, approaches and characteristics of programs that have been rigorously evaluated, peer reviewed, published, and shown to change adolescent sexual risk-taking behavior. The programs and approaches are often called “science-based” programs and approaches. For more information on this presentation/training or this topic, contact Shannon Sainer.
     • Designing and Evaluating Programs that Work: This training offers participants the chance to build program logic models and design program evaluations based on organizational capacity and need.
COAPPP staff are bilingual and can provide trainings and presentations in Spanish or English. Please contact Shannon Sainer for more information on bilingual resources or trainings.

Technical Assistance
More and more funders and communities are demanding evidence of program effectiveness and outcomes, however many programs cannot afford professional evaluators. COAPPP can provide support for program implantation and evaluation processes that help you easily and succinctly demonstrate the true impact of your programs to current and potential funders.

COAPPP staff is available to consult with and provide technical assistance to youth-serving and healthcare professionals throughout the state on a variety of topics related to program planning, selection, implementation, evaluation and sustainability. COAPPP technical assistance serves to increase the capacity of professionals and organizations to integrate and use science-based approaches and programs to prevent teen pregnancy, HIV and STIs. Here are some of the ways in which COAPPP can assist communities and professionals:
     • Developing and/or implementing community or organizational needs assessments
     • Identifying needs and resources in the community to address teen pregnancy, HIV and STI prevention
     • Creating a logic model to outline the specific health goals, sexual risk-taking behaviors, and risk and protective factors that your program aims to address
     • Identifying programs and/or curricula that have been rigorously evaluated and proven effective in changing sexual risk-taking behavior (known as “science-based programs/curricula,” please refer to attached definitions of science-based programs and approaches)
     • Assessing which of these programs or curricula would fit best within your organization or program setting
     • Purchasing the program or curriculum that is identified as most appropriate for your organization
     • Training on the curriculum or program when possible
     • Assisting in planning the implementation of the program or curriculum
     • Developing appropriate evaluation plans and tools for process and outcome evaluation of the selected program
