DECLINE IN TEEN SEX RATE STABLE SINCE 2001
The decline in the percentage of teenagers having
sexual intercourse has stalled after reaching a
plateau in 2001, according to a new analysis of data
from a nationwide CDC survey.

HOUSE VOTES TO EXTEND TITLE V ABSTINENCE EDUCATION
PROGRAM UNTIL SEPTEMBER
The House on
Wednesday voted 291-126 to extend until Sept. 30 the
federal Title V abstinence education program along
with the Transitional Medical Assistance program,
which provides Medicaid coverage to families leaving
welfare. The extension, approved by the Senate
late last month, now goes to President Bush for
consideration.

TEEN BIRTH RATE AT RECORD LOW, CONDOM USE INCREASES
IN 2005, FEDERAL REPORT SAYS The teen
birth rate in the U.S. reached a record low in 2005,
and condom use among high school students increased,
according to a report released on Friday by the
Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family
Statistics.

Wanna Hold Your Hand: The Progression of Social,
Romantic and Sexual Events in Adolescent
Relationships," adolescent relationships progress in
a predictable way, beginning with romantic and
social events, such as spending time with one’s
partner in a group or holding hands. These findings,
they suggest, indicate a need to identify key points
for effective educational, health and clinical
interventions, especially those targeting
adolescents who engage in risky sexual behavior.

TITLE V ABSTINENCE EDUCATION PROGRAM EXPIRES WITHOUT
REAUTHORIZATION The House did not reauthorize
the federal Title V abstinence education prorgram,
allowing it to expire on June 30. Congressional
Democratic leaders said in May they would not
reauthorize the funding because it has not proven to
be effective.
