Champion in Teen
Health
COAPPP is pleased to
highlight an organization, program, or individual
improving the health of teens, with a particular focus
on those committed to the sexual and reproductive health
of teens in Colorado.
Skyland
Community High School sophomore, Crystal Portillo,
hosted a community event on teen
pregnancy prevention on May 4, 2007 at Focus Points
Family Resource Center. Representatives from Planned
Parenthood were present to provide families with
information on teen pregnancy prevention. Families from
the Curtis park area were invited, and many local
businesses donated refreshments for the event.
Organizing the event was her response
to a school project. "I
had a great idea of having a meeting with the teens
about teen pregnancy. There were so many questions that
I wanted to talk to the teens about and try to help them
to solve this problem."
Some of Crystal's questions addressed at the gathering
were: Why
are there so many teens getting pregnant at a young
age? What can the community do to help teens avoid
getting pregnant? Do you think that parents understand
their teens? Whose responsibility is it to prevent
unwanted pregnancy? What do teens need to know about
safe sex?
Crystal explains her motivation
for creating this event, "The reason I wanted it to
do this was because I was really interested in
knowing the main causes of teens getting pregnant at
such a young age," said Crystal. "Not only that, I
was interested in helping teens and bringing the
community together so we could help each other."
