Plenary Speakers Keynote Address Douglas Kirby, PhD Bio Senior Research Scientist, ETR Associates Behavioral Messages For Youth To Prevent Pregnancy and STD: What Should They Be? Currently many sex education programs emphasize abstinence and condoms or other forms of contraception for youth who do have sex. However, these emphases are inadequate and there are other behaviors that have a large impact on STD risk. Dr Kirby will review the content of current messages, their impact on pregnancy rates and their limitations. He will identify additional behaviors that need to be targeted to reduce STD, but are largely ignored by programs. He will identify criteria for effective messages and recommendations for different organizations promoting them. Richelle Frabotta Bio Director of Education Services, Southern Ohio Sexuality Education and Consultation Services So, Exactly What Is "Appropriate"?!: The Dynamic World of Sexuality and Adolescents with Disabilities We live in a culture that characterizes people with disabilities as either asexual/promiscuous or sexual victims/perpetrators. Participants will explore this limited perception as it affects adolescents with disabilities and their developmentally relevant struggle for autonomy. How do atypical learners recognize and embrace their sexuality when they have limited access to accurate information, a lack of visibility and opportunity, punitive consequences for sexual behavior and the physiological challenges of a growing body? Let's engage in a discussion that values the unique and dynamic sense of self that is adolescent sexuality.
